•Grace under fire:
Msgr. Christopher Nalty, pastor of Good Shepherd Parish Uptown, and his friend Father Leo Patalinghug challenged professional chefs Chris Barbato of Commander's Palace and Justin Devillier of La Petite Grocery in a friendly "Grace Under Fire" cook-off June 23 in the parish cafeteria.
More than 150 people attended. The event was a community builder for the three former parishes that comprise Good Shepherd.
•Catholic Charities Community Center oil spill:
Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans has opened five new community centers at church parishes to provide direct aid to families affected by the oil spill.
The centers are open weekdays and distribute $100 grocery store vouchers once a week at each site.
Counseling and case management to help people navigate the BP claims process and apply for food stamps and other needed subsidies also is provided.
The Lafitte site at the St. Anthony Church Community Center, featured here, was the last to open about a month ago because area fisherman were still able to ply their trade up until then.
Other centers are at St. Bernard Church in St. Bernard; St. Thomas Church in Pointe a la Hache, St. Patrick in Port Sulphur and Mary Queen of Vietnam in New Orleans East.
